Working Groups

The development and improvement of the tools offered by NTM is carried out by working groups, which are open for all members. Right now, NTM has four working groups: :

Goods and logistics

The project group continues to develop data for freight transportation. A first database for freight transportation was presented in 1997, followed by an improved user interface, NTMCalc, in 2002. The current work focuses on the improvement of the tool and on the education of its use. More and more transports include international legs, which leads to an increased demand for international analyses of transport chains. NTM has worked out a compilation including international transports. The work is conducted in networks with other actors in Europe and in the USA. The project group also acts as a forum for exchange of information and experience between the players in the freight transport market on how to develop their business and decrease their environmental impact. The work also includes efforts towards a standardization of data and methods in the industry.

Travel

The working group has developed a calculation tool for the environmental impact of passenger transportation with all transport modes. Furthermore, method descriptions and the related data tables were generated. The goal is to continue to develop this basis. The focus is on domestic transportation. The next steps include education in the calculation methodology and the development of improved user-friendly tools.

Transport procurement

The working group aims at developing an effective method for the analysis of the environmental performance of transport suppliers. A tool for the evaluation of transport services is available. It has been in use for a couple of years and is continuously updated. The working group also offers a forum for the exchange of experience on how the procurement department of a company can make environmental demands. The group currently defines new goals and strategies for the coming years.

Fuels

The project group on fuels has the goal to gain accordance on relevant emission values for the operation of vehicles with traditional and alternative fuels and on emission values and the energy use during the production of fuels. The compiled material will be published in a final report.
